Setting aside the courier couldn't find my address on the first attempt (!), after a few days using the Kindle I can say I've found it easy to use and very convenient. Downloading and transferring books is a breeze and once you get used to the various options/settings the Kindle is a delight to use.
The experimental web browser could do with beefing up a bit in terms of speed/functionality, but, that said, it's a great add-on which I've used on more than one occassion.
Oh, I got the 3G version which I think was a good choice as it's a one-off payment for as much 3G as you can handle.

Customer rating stars Not so good for newspapers so far Sent on 04 September 2010
I have only had my Kindle for about 24 hours. If the Kindle had always existed and someone was to suggest inventing paperback books instead everyone would think they were off their rocker. The kindle is easier to hold, easier to read, even in bright sunlight and, of course, is not just one book but a whole library. The Achilles heel of electronic books, battery life, is a non-issue; it is almost indefinite. So downloading, paying for and reading books is totally impressive and represents a major change in the way that we consume literature. Even pictures come out well, albeit in black and white. A lot of older books are actually free and some modern ones are very cheap.

For those that don't have much experience with computers I should perhaps point out that the Kindle has all the things that you would expect from electronic information; it remembers where you are up to on all the books you are reading, you can add bookmarks and notes highlight passages jump to the next chapter and even see what other people have tended to highlight. In short it has all and more than you are likely to want. It also takes a remarkably short time to get your head round how to use it.

I have purchased the more expensive 3G model which gives free Internet access for life. This means that you can access the Internet from most places throughout the UK. It is supported free by an arrangement with Vodafone and I can see why; it is unlikely to affect the bandwidth of their network much. Internet access is extremely cumbersome and it takes much longer to get information than when using a laptop or netbook. Pages load extremely slowly and navigation is by left right and up down buttons that move slowly across the page one jump at a time. There is no mouse of any kind. Where there is no other way of accessing the Internet it still works so you can see what the weather forecast is and the news headlines etc.

Amazon are offering the opportunity to purchase newspapers on line. I suspect that this service will be subject to improvement in the future. I downloaded today's edition of the Financial Times and found that only articles are available. No data. For this reason I think that Kindle Newspapers are currently over-priced.

I certainly am enjoying playing with my new toy (arrived only yesterday). Viewing in bright sunlight is a breeze and battery life is forever. If only it had a better way of navigating the screen when using the internet. Still to be fair, that is not what it was designed for and you can't blame the makers for pushing the envelope a bit (their browser is labelled experimental). The governments contribution to the environment is to charge VAT on the one way of reading that does not involve cutting down trees.

OK let me leave you with a tip that I can't find documented and is quite handy. In order to enter numbers you are supposed to press the symbol key and navigate to the bottom of the pop up to the number you want. There is an easier way. Press ALT followed by a corresponding button on the top row 1 through 9 followed by zero.

Customer rating stars You think this is good? It's even better than you think! WOW. Sent on 04 September 2010
First off, I recieved the Kindle wi-fi 3 days before expected which was a brilliant start. I also have a SONY pocket edition (which I am selling off now) - and I thought the screen on that was okay. I got into the frenzy of preordering the Kindle even though I bought the SONY reader 2 months ago AND I am not disappointed!

When I first opened the box, I saw the Kindle with it's charging instruction screen and I was already excited. Contrary to what some people may argue ('some' being a tiny minority), the Kindle screen does rival a paper version. I read alot of books and the Kindle screen lives up to the paper-like screen. So okay, it's not perfect, but the e-ink screen can only get better from here on out. The Kindle screen is AMAZING - with the dark, crisp fonts against the very light grey background. I compared the screen my SONY pocket reader and SONY doesn't even compare! The Kindle screen has minimal glare, even under direct light (all you have to to is tilt it a little). There is no eye strain - I've read on it for 4 hours straight and my eyes didn't hurt at all.

I was wary of the user interface since I quite like the SONY one but I was pleasantly surprised. The Kindle 3 allows you to create collections, which I think is the Kindle's redeeming quality when it comes to the user interface. I wouldn't have liked turning on my Kindle to find pages and pages of books and docs I had to get through - can you imagine how that would be if you had 3,500 books/files on there? BUT this generation comes with option to create and view by collections which makes the menu much clearer and more organised. I also like the whole menu/home and back buttons, which I didn't have on the SONY. The Kindle is so much faster to navigate than the SONY reader.

On that thought - the page turns are super fast (to me anyway). There is no delay when turning pages and the screen flashes before it settles on the new page. Even the Kindle store and web-kit browser load fast on my wi-fi connection and downloads etc are so easy to do! The Kindle store is easy to navigate and I love the fact that I can download books wirelessly (AND don't have to sit at the computer to transfer all those books). I thought this frivolous before I got the Kindle but I can see the benifits!

Aesthetically, the graphite colour is not much to look at in my opinion - so I've bought a decalgirl 'library' skin to cover it (hasn't arrived yet). The weight of the Kindle is just right without it being too heavy and the size is great. I find the keyboard useful (I have small hands) when searching the Kindle store and the page turn buttons are perfect for me. I know some people find that they accidently hit the 'previous' and 'next' buttons but I've not had that problem. The buttons are conveniently placed so you can hold the Kindle like a book and press the page turn buttons.

Overall, over the last few days my experience with the Kindle has been great - read 2 books so far. I have had a problem where I couldn't connect to the Kindle store but the wi-fi connection was good and I could use the web-kit browser. HOWEVER, Kindle support has been brilliant after I called them up, they helped me sort it out instantly (with a restart) and now it's working. So even the support is 1st class.

So, those wanting a reading device, I say go for the Kindle (the books are cheaper even if you are tied to Amazon). I'd take this Kindle 3 over the new SONY readers coming out in mid September any day!
