If, like me, you do a lot of travelling you will understand the issue of having to schlepp loads of books with you, particularly for longer trips. And, if like me, you do not like throwing books away or leaving them behind in some hotel lobby, then you might have a small weight problem in your luggage after a while.

Of course the Kindle will never replace a printed page for me (I like looking at two pages normally and just flick through and read at random sometimes). And I am sure it won't cope in the same manner with sand and water like the printed page. It will not replace the printed page for art books and other folio voumes.

But the Kindle though does it for me on travels. I don't user it otherwise. I has some excellent features that make it so handy: it is compact, easy to handle, light, you can magnify the script, buy boks almost anywhere in the world where you have reception (I'll give it a try in India next), etc.

I have to admit that I haven't used yet all its features, and I doubt that I will. It has been a good buy in terms of efficiency, value for money and customer satisfaction, and a much lighter suitcase.

Setting aside the courier couldn't find my address on the first attempt (!), after a few days using the Kindle I can say I've found it easy to use and very convenient. Downloading and transferring books is a breeze and once you get used to the various options/settings the Kindle is a delight to use.
The experimental web browser could do with beefing up a bit in terms of speed/functionality, but, that said, it's a great add-on which I've used on more than one occassion.
Oh, I got the 3G version which I think was a good choice as it's a one-off payment for as much 3G as you can handle.

Customer rating stars Not so good for newspapers so far Sent on 04 September 2010
I have only had my Kindle for about 24 hours. If the Kindle had always existed and someone was to suggest inventing paperback books instead everyone would think they were off their rocker. The kindle is easier to hold, easier to read, even in bright sunlight and, of course, is not just one book but a whole library. The Achilles heel of electronic books, battery life, is a non-issue; it is almost indefinite. So downloading, paying for and reading books is totally impressive and represents a major change in the way that we consume literature. Even pictures come out well, albeit in black and white. A lot of older books are actually free and some modern ones are very cheap.

For those that don't have much experience with computers I should perhaps point out that the Kindle has all the things that you would expect from electronic information; it remembers where you are up to on all the books you are reading, you can add bookmarks and notes highlight passages jump to the next chapter and even see what other people have tended to highlight. In short it has all and more than you are likely to want. It also takes a remarkably short time to get your head round how to use it.

I have purchased the more expensive 3G model which gives free Internet access for life. This means that you can access the Internet from most places throughout the UK. It is supported free by an arrangement with Vodafone and I can see why; it is unlikely to affect the bandwidth of their network much. Internet access is extremely cumbersome and it takes much longer to get information than when using a laptop or netbook. Pages load extremely slowly and navigation is by left right and up down buttons that move slowly across the page one jump at a time. There is no mouse of any kind. Where there is no other way of accessing the Internet it still works so you can see what the weather forecast is and the news headlines etc.

Amazon are offering the opportunity to purchase newspapers on line. I suspect that this service will be subject to improvement in the future. I downloaded today's edition of the Financial Times and found that only articles are available. No data. For this reason I think that Kindle Newspapers are currently over-priced.

I certainly am enjoying playing with my new toy (arrived only yesterday). Viewing in bright sunlight is a breeze and battery life is forever. If only it had a better way of navigating the screen when using the internet. Still to be fair, that is not what it was designed for and you can't blame the makers for pushing the envelope a bit (their browser is labelled experimental). The governments contribution to the environment is to charge VAT on the one way of reading that does not involve cutting down trees.

OK let me leave you with a tip that I can't find documented and is quite handy. In order to enter numbers you are supposed to press the symbol key and navigate to the bottom of the pop up to the number you want. There is an easier way. Press ALT followed by a corresponding button on the top row 1 through 9 followed by zero.
